House for Carl and Alicia
CLICK HERE TO GO BACK TO LARGER PHOTOS OF HOUSE FLOOR PLAN MAIN LEVEL There are some points of interest here. The house is designed on a four foot square unit system. The units are numbered across and lettered vertically for easy reference. I learned to use the unit system by studying the architecture of Frank Lloyd Wright and the Architects at Taliesin when I was an apprentice. It is one of the first choices I make before starting a design plan and the design is worked out in relationship to the units. I mostly use the square unit but have also worked with many others. Equilateral Triangle, Hexagonal, Arcs, and others. A good book to learn about the unit system is Frank Lloyd Wright's USONIAN HOUSES, Designs for moderate cost one-Family Homes, by John Sergeant. The Ocean is about 100 feet southeast of the house or to the bottom of the screen but there is only a glimpse of it through the trees. There is a study space on the floor above the Living Space and an outside balcony that can view more of the ocean from this higher vantage point. I have designed the circulation of the house so that it is on the exterior wall. You will notice that when walking from the Work Space through the Living and Master Bed Room to the Master Bath at the north end of the house you are always on the perimeter. It is really one continuous space and has the feeling of always being open to something more beyond within the house as well as to the outside. This is one example of an "Organic Space". The roof plane is a single 5 in 12 pitch that starts just above the ground at units D-3 and below the main floor level and rises up to shelter most of the living space of the house. The pitch direction is north or at a diagonal to the unit. Any questions? Let's do one for you. Or if you're a student design your own.
